Step 2 in the 12-step program for dealing with unemployment

Get a hobby!

After the inevitable hammer slammed down I found myself endlessly searching for jobs. Everyday was a repetitious cycle of disappointment. Sure, I would find hopeful leads on the internet but when I would actually look closer at the listed job I would see that it was either an old posting or another sales job that required an inexplicable down payment on my behalf!

As the days turned into weeks and the weeks in to months, I realized that not only was I slipping in to an unemployment funk, but a full-blown depression. I found myself not wanting to get out of bed. I started watching so much television that I didn’t need the TV guide to tell me what shows were on when. But the biggest blow came a couple months down the road when I made the tragic mistake (or blessing) of stepping on the scale. I was getting fat!

No longer could I justify spending 12 hours in bed followed by twelve hours of television and Twinkie consumption. I had to get my ass out of depression and out of the house. So I searched in the recesses of my past to find what used to make me happy, and that is when I found my salvation through Golf!

Golf bliss

Instead of spending hours in front of the television I decided to force my lazy butt out of the house and back into a hobby that made me forget that I was unemployed. No one at the clubhouse new my situation nor did they care. I had found my escape. I know most of you reading this blog are questioning the judgment of escaping into an expensive hobby when you are unemployed. I am fortunate that I live in a place that provides extremely cheap golf. If I did not live where I live I undoubtedly would have had to find another hobby, and I would have. You can find really good deals here that may encourage you to frequent the greens more often.

My advice is simple, find what makes you happy. Maybe it is something you used to do when you were younger such as tennis or basketball, or maybe it is something entirely new that you can pick up and take this time to get good at. Whatever it may be (to steal a line from Nike) Just do it.
Who knows, it might even lead to your next job!
