How to Repair a Hole in the Wall

March 5, 2010

Holes can easily be punctured through walls. These little discrepancies can be very unsightly. As ugly as they may be, they’re actually quite an easy fix.

To begin repairs, remove any debris or remaining paper from the holes. Try to tear away any loose wall material and clean off the surrounding dust. Smooth over the area around the hole with a soft brush and then by a medium to fine grit sandpaper.

Now, cut a hole into a symmetrical square using a utility knife. Press firmly into the wall material and use a straightedge to follow a careful line. Remove any excess.

Still using a utility knife, prepare and cut another piece of drywall to fit the square made in the previous step. Be certain the new piece is slightly smaller than the repair area.

Place the new square patch into the hole and tack it into place with a drywall screw. You can secure the patch into the wall firmly this way.

Cut strips of sheetrock or drywall tape, and tape over the edges of the repaired area.

Apply a thin layer of drywall compound over the patched area evenly. Spread and tape it with a putty knife. Be sure to extend the compound past the edges for about six inches.

Now, sand the patched area once the drywall compound has dried. Use a medium to fine grit piece of sandpaper. Now, paint the area after you remove all the dust and clean up the wall.

*Like always, these are just guidelines. Be sure to consult professional help if you have any questions. Good luck!
