One of humanity’s greatest tools in providing prosperity for itself, and in its ultimate pursuit of peace and happiness, is the freedom to contract. Contrary to modern intuition, upon strict observation one will find the true harbinger of a classless society is capitalism. The foundation of such a society is the freedom to contract, or the freedom of individuals to bargain among themselves and determine the terms of their own contracts, without governmental interference.

The first few weeks after I lost my job I found myself frantically scouring the internet for jobs. I started by searching all of the major jobs sites like Monster and Career builder while applying for any jobs that I thought might be remotely in my area. I ran the gambit from sales to secretarial jobs. I probably applied for over two hundred jobs in the first two weeks alone. Confidently, it felt as though I was on the fast track to employment.
A funny thing happened in the following weeks, no one called or emailed. I couldn't figure it out. Did I not fill out the resume correctly? Maybe I wasn't hitting the right button to send my application? Whatever the reason, I was certain it would work itself out and the employers would call me the following week.

Well, the third week rolled around, and still no calls or emails. My eyes had grown tired from continuously staring at the computer screen. My brain as well had worn itself out from the attempts at telepathy with my inbox. Something was wrong and it wasn’t my ability to hit the button marked “apply.” I started to take a closer look at the jobs I was actually applying for. I then had the obvious revelation I am not the only one applying for these jobs!

Job security working for corporate America is merely a seductive illusion. Job security working for anyone other than yourself puts you at the mercy of the person running the show. Assuming they have their companies best interest in mind, all it takes to get canned now a days is any slight deviation in consumer spending habits, an upgrade of a current system or technology, and BAM… That’s the end of you working for company XYZ. If you’re lucky you’ll receive a few weeks notice, barely enough time look for a side job just to afford the gas you’ll use while driving to future interviews, let alone pay any significant bills.

Now you find yourself in a position where you marched to the beat of someone else’s drum for so long that you find it hard to know where to turn. You went to work on someone else’s schedule and toiled with fitting a social life, hobbies, and family time around this life sentence of false security. You got paid on your employers’ schedule, regardless if needed the money for work you performed yesterday so you can be on time for your cell phone bill that’s due tomorrow. Your check still came every other Thursday or Friday. Better still did you ever find yourself among the group of people that consistently worked hard, did everything by the books only to see yourself get passed over again and again like a 1976 brown Ford Pinto at a Bentley dealership, by someone who did little to no work but “played the game” well enough to get the spot you deserved?

I’m not saying you should look for a unicycle, clown clothing, and a juggling for dummies book in order put on a fake show for someone. Quite the contrary, being insincere is actually pretty obvious to sniff out, and nothing kills rapport quicker than having a fake demeanor. If you aren’t an outgoing person by nature and feel that it’s challenging to start discussions with people you don’t know, asking questions is a great way to initiate dialog. Don’t be afraid to explain the details that go into the work you are performing for your client. He/she will appreciate that you are taking the time to address any concerns, and can also open up other topics of discussion that might allow your expertise to stand out. Next time that person needs to find an assistant to complete work for them they will remember how open and sincere you were, and that you were pleasant to have around.
